Diabetes care: Ways to avoid complications

The term  diabetes is derived from Latin word (Greek) and meaning is "to go through" refering to large amount of urine produced by kidneys.

The term diabetes mellitus, the mellitus in Latin, meaning "Sweet". Diabetes mellitus causes high blood glucose levels and glucose eventually spills into urine 

When we hear the word diabetes, first thought is likely about to have high blood sugar. Blood sugar is an often underestimated component of  health. With over a time it could develop into diabetes. Diabetes affects body's ability to produce or use insulin, a hormone that allows your body to turn glucose (sugar) into energy. 

Diabetes complications 

Diabetes can be effectively managed when caught early. However, when left untreated it can lead to potential complications that include.
  • Diabetes and coronary heart disease are closely related. 
  • A relatively common complication of diabetic retinopathy 
  • Kidney disease as a result of diabetes known as diabetic nephropathy 
  • Neuropathy is commonly noticed with diabetes it causes numbness or tingling in the hands or feet, excessive sweating etc. 


Ways to avoid complications 

1) Make a commitment to managing diabetes 

It's up to you to manage your diabetes condition. Learn all you can about diabetes from members of your diabetes care team doctor or primary care provider, diabetes nurse educator, and dietitian. 
Monitor your blood sugar, and follow your doctor instructions. Take medication as directed by your doctor.

2) keep your blood pressure and cholesterol under control

Eating healthy food, reduced fat diet and exercise regularly can go a long way towards controlling high blood pressure and cholesterol.
Like a diabetes, high blood pressure can damage your blood vessels. High cholesterol is a concern too. The damage is worse and more rapid when you have diabetes. When this condition team up, they lead heart attack, stroke or other life threatening condition 
Ask your doctor about this, your doctor may also recommend taking prescription medications to control blood pressure and cholesterol, if necessary

3) Check your blood sugar regularly

A device called a glucose meter can provide a blood sugar reading from just a drop of blood . You can check your blood sugar easily from yourself by the help of this device. This will tell you how well your diet exercise and medication are working. If you check the reading are high meet your doctor, doctor may change ur medicines if necessary. 

4) Schedule regular physical and eye exams 

During physical examination your doctor check your nutrition and activity level and look for any diabetes related complications includes sings of kidney damage, nerve damage and heart disease as well as screen the other medical problems 

Your eyes care specialist will check for signs of retinal damage, cataracts and glaucoma 

5) Don't Smoke 

Smoking increase various diabetic complication including
  • Heart disease 
  • Stroke 
  • Eye disease which can leds to blindness 
  • Nerve damage 
  • Kidney diseases 
  • Reduced blood flow in legs and feet, which can leads to infections, ulcers and possible removal of body part by surgery (amputation) 
  • Premature death 
Talks to your doctor about ways to help you to stop smoking. 

6) If you drink alcohol, do so responsible

Alcohol can cause high or low blood sugar, depending on how much you drink and whether you eat at same time. 
Always drink with meal or snack and remember to include the calories from any alcohol you drink in your daily calorie count. 
Ask your doctor to provide you moderation limits of alcohol. 

7)  Pay attention to your feet 

To prevent foot problems 
  • Wash your feet daily in lukewarm water. 
  • Dry your feet gently, especially between the toes.
  • Moisturize your feet and ankles with lotion 
  • Check your feet daily for calluses, blisters, sores, redness or swelling. 
  • Don't go barefoot indoor or outdoor 
  • Consult your doctor if you have sore or other foot problem that does not start to heal within a few day. 

8) Exercise 

Regular exercise is good for people with diabetes. It lowers blood sugar. Exercise also 
  • Improve blood flow 
  • Lowers blood pressure
Exercise helps burn extra fat so that you can keep your weight down. Exercise can help you to handle stress and improve your mood 

9) Medicines 

There are many Medicines that work in different way to help your blood sugar. Many people with type 2 diabetes need to take more than one Medicines to control diabetes. Meet your doctor to get best medicines for your problem and follow sedule given by your doctor 

10) Take Stress seriously 

If you're stressed it easy to neglect your usual diabetes care routine. To manage your stress, set limits. Priorities your tasks. Learn relaxation techniques.
