Boosting immune system to fight the coronavirus 
The question comes on our mind can we boost our immune system to fight against coronavirus COVID-19 ?
This are the question on everyone mind as we face a worldwide crisis. We don't yet know how to fully prevent or manage the damage caused by coronavirus that is new to us. In the midst of a global pandemic, our bodies immune system are working wonders to protect us from bugs and virus. But how will it protect us from new virus COVID-19 which is responsible for corona disease.

As coronavirus COVID-19 strain is so new it's not yet known whether our bodies will build up an immunity to the virus.

We don't know enough about interaction between the current coronavirus and our immune system to definitely say if we would develop a protective immune memory response and if we do we don't know if the memory response is long lived. Nor do we know whether the virus will mutate and evade that protective memory 

But there is good news. As people are recovering from coronavirus, that the immune system can successfully fight off the coronavirus 

Our bodies will have capacity to build immunity to coronavirus, if exposed. However, like many viruses, this coronavirus can change easily and often. A new version of virus may have the ability to hide the immune memory cell.

So what can you do to protect yourself against coronavirus. Focus on preventing exposure to and spead of virus.
  • Wash your hands
  • If you cough or sneeze do so in tissue and through this tissue away 
  • Avoid touching your hand to mouth and eyes 
The other part is practicing the health promoting behaviours that keep your own immune system functioning at top capacity 

A nutritious diet and an optimally functioning immune system can never go wrong. If you have a healthy immune system, your body can safeguard you from any diseases, even the novel coronavirus 

Clinical nutritionist shares a list of immunity boosting foods 

Turmeric(haldi): The turmeric is known for antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Curcumin, the compound present in turmeric is very potent agent and agid in healing of wounds and infection. This is often suggested to have turmeric milk.

Natural antivirus foods: Tulsi leaves, star anise(a spice), garlic, and ginger are some of the natural anti virus food items which gives protection from seasonal flue as well. This all help in boosting immunity 

Vitamin: Among all kind of vitamins, vitamin C and vitamin D play a major role in strengthening one's immunity. For same, one should have more citrus fruits and vegetables like Amla, lemon, orange and others. Also egg yolks and mushrooms are good source of vitamin D 

Yogurt (curd): yogurt is natural probiotic and aids in formation of good bacteria in our body. Remember it has to be freshly made.

Zinc: It is another nutrient that helps your immune system and metabolism function. An individual can either take zinc supplements or inculcate in their diet through cashews, pumpkin seeds, chickpeas, among others.  

Echinacea: Echinacea is herb that fight against the flu, helps to control blood sugar, aids healthy cell growths, reduce risk of breast cancer, helps to manage anxiety, lowers blood pressure, reduces information research shows it help in development of white cell which fight against infections.

There are things that you can do today that don't cost anything. You prioritise these basic steps for protecting and improve your immune system

Don't smoke: Smokers have an increased risk of catching infections and suffering severe complications from those infection 

Get adequate sleep: Sleep is important for health in general, and as a bonus it may also benefit our immune function.

Right amount of exercise: Observational studies show that those who exercise tend to suffer fewer infection less than those who do not. 

Stress management: When we are stressed. The immune system ability to fight against the antigen reduced. That why we are more susceptible to infections. The stress hormone corticosteroid suppress the effectiveness of immune system. 

Drinking alcohol is harmful: Studies show a chronic heavy alcohol consumption and increased susceptibility to infections. It will damage you're liver and cardiovascular system. It can also damage your digestive system, leading to malnutrition and even increase the risk of cancer.

Traveling: Avoid all kind of non-essential travels. Avoid being exposed to public transport system and public places to avoid any likelihood of exposure 

Apart from maintaining a healthy lifestyle and taking supplements, the Indian heath ministry is also suggesting few organic and natural ways to practice as preventive measures to fight against COVID-19. 

The ministry of AYUSH has recommended as following self care quidelines  as preventive measures and to boost immunity with special reference to respiratory health 
  • Drink warm water through out the day 
  • Practice Meditation, yogasana, and Pranayam
  • Increase the intake of turmeric, cumin, coriander and garlic 
  • Drink herbal tea 
  • Avoid sugar and replace it with jaggery if needed 
  • Apply Ghee, sesame oil, or coconut oil in both the nostrils to keep the nostrils clean 
  • Inhale steam with mint leaves and caraway seeds
