Coronavirus: Prevention Tips

SARS-CoV-2(Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2), which is refer to as coronavirus, cause coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19). The Centres for Disease Control and prevention (CDC) states the virus that causes COVID-19 spreads mainly between people who are in close contact with one anther. The virus can be contracted from Respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes or by touching a surface that has the virus on it and then touching their face. 

People can take the following everyday action to protect themselves and others from thic COVID-19 


Hand Washing: 
Regular hand washing is one of the main ways to help prevent the transmission of coronavirus 
People should use plenty of soap and water to wash their hands for at least 20 seconds, 
especially after:
  • Traveling on public transport
  • Being in public place 
  • Coughing 
  • Sneezing 
  • Blowing their nose 
If a person is not able to use soap and water, they can use a hand sanitizer contain atleast 60% alcohol 
Washing hands with soap or hand sanitizer helps kill any viruses on the hands that may have come into contact with virus 

Prevention while traveling:
  • Perform hand hygiene frequently, particularly after contact with respiratory secretions 
  • Cover your nose and mouth with a flexed elbow or paper tissue when coughing or sneezing and disposing immediately of the tissue and performing hand hygiene
  • Refrain from touching mouth and nose 
  • Weare a proper mask which should completely cover the nose and mouth.
  • Traveller are also advised to follow proper food hygiene.
  • Traveller returning from affected areas should self monitor for symptoms for 14 days such as fever, or cough or difficulty breathing etc 

Prevention in household 
The most valuable prevention method for household is keeping all the surface clean. A person should clean all surfaces that people touch regularly, including light switches, door handles and countertops 

To do so, they can use water and a household detergent. For surfaces that are visible dirty, a person may wish to use a detergent and then disinfectant.

Prevention in workplace 
Employer and workers can reduce the risk of coronavirus transmission in workplace by 
  • By cleaning and disinfecting all surfaces regularly
  • Encourage regular hand washing by putting up posters, supplying hand sanitizer, and providing access to soap and water 
  • Using conference calls to hold meetings, rather than meeting face to face 
  • Getting employees to work from whenever possible 
  • Communicating clearly to employees that people will need to say at home if they display any symptoms of COVID-19
Prevention at School: 
Some ways to prevent transmission in schools include 
  • Displaying poster to encourage proper hand washing 
  • Frequently clean and disinfecting surfaces such as tables, chair and door handles 
  • Providing soap, water and hand sanitizer
  • Limiting all meetings and non-essential events 
  • Having sick children stay at home 
  • Implementation distance learning if possible 
  • Educate students on COVID-19 and how it may effect them.
Limiting contact with others 
People should take care to avoid coming into close contact with others especially those who are older, unwell, or have symptoms of virus 
The CDC recommend staying 6 feet away from anyone who is coughing or sneezing.

Avoiding touching the face: 
People should avoid touching their eyes, nose, and mouth with their hands, especially if they are unwashed.
The hands come into contact with several surfaces throughout the day, and they may pick up viruses this way 
A new report suggests that COVID-19 can remain on certain surface for up to 3 days 
If person then touches their face, virus can transfer to eyes, nose, or mouth and enter the body 

Staying home if unwell 
If a person has mild symptoms of COVID-19, they can self isolate by stating at home and avoiding contact with others 
Even if a person is unsure whey they have COVID-19, a common cold, or something else, it is the best to stay at home

People can take steps to prevent the spread of coronavirus and help protect themselves and others. Simple steps such as handwashing and social distancing can be vital tools in reducing coronavirus's impact
